50's Draft League

In addition to the regular Monday night 50’s Senior ball, Wednesday night will be a 50 plus draft league. There were simply not enough people to put together a 55 plus league. The new draft league is available to anyone over 50. If you are 55, you can play. If you are 60, you can play. The only criteria is to be over 50. This allows all 50 plus players a second night to play softball and stay sharp.

This is going to be exciting and provide a venue for new players to come into the league that might not have been able to play before. We also know there are a lot of good players just waiting to be found. These new players can be establish their abilities then move into the Monday night teams in subsequent years. We are going to have a massive recruiting campaign to keep a steady flow of new recruits to maintain the long term health of our program. You will love the results and this new league will ultimately create more players, more teams, and be fun with parity yet still be competitive.

We are going to establish a way to have all 50 plus players that want to play placed into the player pool. We will use prior year sign ups plus anyone who has expressed an interest to play. Verification that a player want to play will be by the payment of his registration fee. I have attached the form to use. Everyone is invited to attend the meeting; however, it is not necessary. What is more important is the expression of your desire to play (i.e. fill out the form and send in your money). Your managers will contact you!

We will cut off sign ups around Mar 10. This will allow us to reserve the fields with Boise and allow time to establish the teams.

If anyone has any questions, please let me know or contact any other Board member.

Thanks,

Cliff Boxer

Ken Rhodes letter to the editor

These have been exciting times for Idaho sports.
The BSU Broncos have given Idaho fans a reason to be proud of our state and prove that an Idaho team can play with anybody in the nation.
Boise State isn't the only local team making a name for itself on the national sports scene. There are a few "minor" differences between the Boise State football team and the local team, however.
The team is McU Sports, the sport is softball and the players are all over age 50, most are over 55. This group of athletes won the AA "World Championship" crown in Phoenix two years ago beating 25 other teams and came in third at this year's tournament in the AAA Division against 28 other teams.
Both of these accomplishments were submitted to the Sports department at the Statesman.
One was never published and the other was put in the "Community" section where those of us who were looking for it didn't see it.
Take "pride" Idaho, you have a "world championship" team right here in Idaho.
Too bad you have to learn about them in a letter and not on the sports page of the Statesman.
For more information about senior softball call Ken Rhodes at 891-0101.

Tournament

Western Nationals will be held in Salt Lake City on July 15-20, 2008. The phone number for more information is 916-326-5303 (ask for Dave Dowell.)

Teams must play in a qualifier to be eligible for Western Nationals.

Annual Meeting News

The Boise Senior Softball Association held its' annual meeting on
January 14, 2008.
Thank you to Pizza Hut for the meeting room and hospitality.

Jack Ward from the YMCA/Idaho Senior Games spoke about the Senior Games Tournament. The dates for the tournament are August 23 & 24. The tournament will be a National Qualifier for the 2009 National Tournament. Jack hopes to have at least 20 teams. He would also like to have a Senior Women's Tournament
if there is enough interest. Teams from Texas and Nebraska have inquired.

Al Cragar from the Boise Umpire Softball Association spoke about rules and the one versus two umpire system. The Senior Softball Association voted for a two umpire system and to not use a run through any base format.

The Bend, Oregon Silver Bullet Tournament normally held in late July has been cancelled for 2008. It may be reinstated for 2009.

New officers elected to the board for a two year term are:
Wes Stoddard, Bill Gooden, Roger Zoeller, and Dennis Crane.

A new over 60 Draft League will be formed for the 2008 spring and fall seasons. For information or to sign up, contact Ron Blanton at 422-1200.
